What a
wonderful start to the day! Geordie
was the first to emerge from a dreaming state and decided
that it would be easier to share his plans for the day with
his alter ego, who apparently was sat on the end of his bed. After
all why else would he possibly want to talk out loud considering
that his fellow team mates were still asleep! It was
after all 6am! Lynne dealt with the matter quite adequately
by negotiating a return to tranquility in a swift yet effective
manner.
An hour later and Glenn
decided it was time to rise. Now
we all know the story of Bag Puss don’t we. Oh
yes when Bag Puss sleeps everybody sleeps…and when
he wakes…well we had no choice. The light went
on and then the victor Meldrew impressions began. Fueled
by what I hear you cry. Well apparently Mike is not
too quiet in his sleep either! Mike thought he had
been awake all night but the reality was far from this state
of perception. Glenn considered that he had spent the
night amongst a family of 16 skeletons making love in a biscuit
tin. Lynne was in too much shock to really complain about
much and Geordie…well let’s be honest he does
not complain about much does he. Perhaps that is because
those in glass houses! Suffice to say Mike left the
youth hostel feeling suitably guilty for keeping people awake
through the night with his snoring. Perhaps it is not
a peaceful sedative sound after all?
Enough about the night…day 2 started with a harsh
reality check as Lynne stood gazing at the rain drops racing
each other down the window glass as she prepared her energy
drink for the day. Supposedly once diluted it is an
energy enhancing fluid! I think Lynne missed the point
here some where as she prepared two bottles of what I can
only describe as containing a substance more resembling of
a breakfast fit for one of the three bears! Perhaps
tomorrow we’ll make sure that there is more water than
powder in the bottle and she can leave the spoons at home! After
a team breakfast and brief we were off. A peaceful
drive back to Conwy (no they did not find the missing “a” overnight!)
and then we set them off up and over the Conwy bay estuary
bridge and towards Birkenhead (Hooray a place with the correct
amount of vowels in it). The weather at this point…well
one word describes it quite sufficiently…WET!
Once off it was time
for the support crew to find an insecure wireless network
to hack into and send the blog and photo’s
back. And what do you know good old Ronald came to
the rescue offering us the sanctuary of his plentiful establishment
together with two freshly ground coffees and a couple of
sausage and egg McMuffins. We could only endure the
warm dry comfort for about ½ hour before feeling a
little guilty and setting off to find Lynne and Geordie.
As if by magic we found
them 4 miles short of the RV point but in fairness to them
it had not stopped raining once and after 2 hours of drenching
they deserved a rest. We
delivered them a freshly ground coffee and two cheese burgers
each. A hearty mid morning snack! Well deserved
I would say! Lynne was looking a little cold and wet
round about now and it was only 11am. It was round
about now that she decided to tell us that she had not “road
tested” her waterproof jacket for the last 17 years
and surprisingly it had the water retention capabilities
of a paper napkin! Perhaps she should have worn her
glasses!
After a short stop they
were off again and Glenn and Mike shot off to obtain the
necessary supplies for the rest of the day. The weather
did not let up ALL DAY so we decided that we would piggy
back lay bys about 5 miles apart to make sure Lynne and
Geordie had the necessary nourishment and so we could take
every opportunity to spur them on and of course gloat from
the warm comfort of our Ford Galaxy cop pit!
The cyclists then suddenly
found some reserve energy and picked up the pace, which
threw Glenn and Mike as now they had to adjust the Costa
Coffee stops…really the sacrifices
we are having to make! We got to Birkenhead at 2.30pm. This
was fantastic going as we were 4 hours ahead of schedule
despite the weather. No time to stop for lunch though…Geordie
and Lynne wanted to push on. Whether that was a desire
to eat into tomorrows cycling time or a fear of stopping
for too long in central Liverpool we will not know. I
can tell you this…they were not stopping at red lights!
On reflection having
cycled through Liverpool’s town
centre it may be dangerous to revisit or stay there any longer
than necessary in case the several taxi drivers that Lynne
and Geordie “upset” recognise them? In
fairness though there is nothing to prevent a cyclist from
veering to and fro across a four lane carriageway…is
there?
Onwards we traveled north
through Liverpool and towards Preston. They managed to get to just north of Ormskirk
(Look on the map!) before calling it a day today, still a
good 20 miles ahead of schedule! We then drove two
VERY WET little puppies back into Liverpool town centre to
stay the night at Gwa’s? It’s ok there
are tinted windows in the galaxy…we were quite safe. And
it proved to be a sensible and very welcome trip back. We
have now enjoyed a fantastic evening at Gwa’s with
fine food; fine wine and fine company. We are all looking
forward to a pleasant nights rest in our own rooms until
role call when Bag Puss wakes in the morning!
